The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the development of eight important National High-Speed Corridor projects. These projects will cover a length of 936 kilometers and cost Rs. 50,655 crore. The implementation of these projects is expected to create about 4.42 crore mandays of direct and indirect employment.
6-Lane Kanpur Ring Road
One of the key projects is the 6-Lane Kanpur Ring Road. This 47-kilometer access-controlled section will be developed using the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode, with a total cost of Rs. 3,298 crore. This section will complete the 6-lane National Highway Ring around Kanpur. The Ring Road will help separate long-distance traffic on major National Highways like NH 19 (Golden Quadrilateral), NH 27 (East West Corridor), NH 34, and the upcoming Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway and Ganga Expressway from local city traffic. This will improve logistics efficiency for freight traveling between Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
The Six-Lane Greenfield Kanpur Ring Road will start from Design Chainage (Ch.) 23+325 to Design Ch. 68+650, covering a length of 46.775 kilometers, with an additional Airport Link Road of 1.45 kilometers.
Other High-Speed Road Corridor Projects
Other approved projects include:
– Agra to Gwalior: Travel time will be reduced by 50%.
– Kharagpur to Moregram Corridor: This will boost the economy of West Bengal and the North-East.
– Raipur to Ranchi Corridor: This will unlock growth in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.
– Tharad to Ahmedabad Corridor: This will complete the High-Speed Road Network in Gujarat, ensuring seamless port connectivity and reducing logistics costs.
– Guwahati Ring Road: This will facilitate un-hindered access to the North-East.
– Ayodhya: Traveling to Ayodhya will be much faster.
– 8-Lane Elevated Flyover between Pune and Nashik: This will eliminate logistics challenges.
Importance of Infrastructure Development
Infrastructure development is crucial for a country’s economic prosperity and improving the quality of life for its citizens. Every rupee spent on infrastructure development has a multiplier effect of about 2.5 to 3.0 times on GDP. Recognizing this, the Government of India has been investing heavily in building world-class road infrastructure over the past ten years.
The government has adopted a corridor-based highway infrastructure development approach. This focuses on consistent standards, user convenience, and logistics efficiency, rather than just addressing local congestion. This approach has led to the identification of a network of 50,000 kilometers of High-Speed Highway Corridors. These corridors are based on scientific transport studies using GSTN and toll data, supporting India’s transformation into a $30+ trillion economy by 2047.
These high-speed corridors will play a significant role in boosting economic growth, improving logistics, and enhancing connectivity across the country.
