Dorothy’s Seat, also known as Tiffin Top, was one of Nainital’s most beloved tourist spots. Located on Ayarpatta Hill in Uttarakhand, it stood at an impressive altitude of about 2,290 meters above sea level. This vantage point was famous for offering stunning 360-degree views of Nainital and the surrounding Kumaon mountains. Tourists, nature lovers, and photographers often flock to this spot to capture the breathtaking beauty, especially during sunrise and sunset.
Unfortunately, Dorothy’s Seat recently collapsed following a landslide caused by heavy rain. The collapse occurred around 11 p.m. on a Tuesday night, and the loud bang from the event echoed through the town, causing alarm. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported.
According to Pramod Kumar, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), the landslide sent huge boulders crashing down from the hill. The hill leading to Tiffin Top had developed deep cracks due to continuous heavy rains, which eventually caused the collapse of Dorothy’s Seat. The round platform on top of a flight of steps, which had a bench on it, cracked and gave way due to the unstable ground.
Dorothy’s Seat held historical significance as well. The spot was named after Dorothy Kellet, an English painter who tragically died in a plane crash. Her husband, Col. J.P. Kellet, built a stone bench in her memory at this location. Over time, this bench became a symbol of love and remembrance, attracting visitors who wanted to experience the tranquility and scenic beauty of the place.
Bhohat Kasol: Himachal Pradesh’s Emerging Rural Tourist Destination
Tiffin Top was more than just a tourist spot; it was a cherished place for locals and visitors alike. The scenic beauty of the area, combined with its historical significance, made it a must-visit spot in Nainital. The panoramic views from the top, especially during sunrise and sunset, were simply unforgettable. It was a favorite spot for photographers who wanted to capture the natural beauty of the Kumaon region, and for nature lovers who wanted to experience the serenity of the mountains.
The loss of Dorothy’s Seat is a significant one for Nainital, as it was not just a tourist attraction, but also a place of historical importance and natural beauty. While the collapse is a reminder of the powerful forces of nature, it also highlights the need for careful preservation of such sites.
As Nainital moves forward, the memories of Dorothy’s Seat will continue to hold a special place in the hearts of those who visited and admired its beauty. The spot may have physically collapsed, but its legacy and the stories associated with it will live on.
